Freedom From Hunger Campaign (FFHC)
Freedom from Hunger Campaign works to ensure productive and sustained agricultural practices with farmers, particularly women and rural communities to improve food security, income and welfare. We look after our funds by producing quarterly financial reports and utilising the financial management training we received from the EU funded Non State Actors Strengthening Programme. We are organised with a board of 9 members who are elected by general membership and serve for a two year term. We produce quarterly narrative reports and conduct regular monitoring and evaluation visits to the field. Our staff have received training in child protection, fundraising and leadership. We communicate by conducting a series of meetings with target communities’ pre project to identify the help they need. We hold regular staff meetings and host an Annual General Meeting. We engage with government We discuss government policies with the Regional Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The government agencies we work with include Soil and Water Management, Department of State of Agriculture, Forestry Department, National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), Department of Community Development (DCD) and Rural Finance Project (RFP). The organisation has undertaken many projects over the years; these best reflect our skills. The Rural Finance Intermediation in collaboration with the Rural Finance Project in 2002 – 2009. We established 8 village savings and credit associations in 8 communities in the Lower River Region. This created an environment where rural women could access local savings and loan facilities at affordable rates. The savings and credit associations are sustainable and continue to be a success. LIFE Project (Livelihood Improvement, Food Security and Environment) The LIFE Project was a collaborative effort with Concern Universal funded by the European Union in 2005 – 2009. We mobilised communities to plant vegetable gardens, woodlots and orchards to ensure they have sustainable livelihoods. EXCEL Project (Empowering Civil Society Organisations through Capacity Building and Network Linkages) FFHC benefitted from the capacity building EXCEL Project funded by DFID. Concern Universal implemented the EXCEL Project with a number of core civil society organisations. The project sought to increase the capacity of the organisations to enable them to fulfil their mission of poverty alleviation through a structured approach. This approach was in line with the framework of the government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). |
Creating Access to Rice fields for food security Enhancement (CARE) is a 12 month project we are currently implementing, funded by the European Union under the Non State Actors Strengthening Programme. Our aim is to achieve food self-sufficiency and improve the living standards of the people of the Jarra West District. The Gambia is classified as a low income food deficit country and produces about 50 % of total food consumption needs. The Lower River Region where the Jarra West District is located is considered to be the poorest region in the country despite all available natural resources for rice production. This project seeks to tackle the obstacles Jarra women face when planting rice by providing them with access to the fields, nutritious feed and a safe place for their babies while they work. The projects main activities are the building of 14 access bridges and 2,500 metres of causeway. We are also constructing baby-sitting houses for the rice farmer’s children and holding skills training workshops for 60 women farmers to enable them to prepare baby feeding supplements for young ones. 150 hectares of arable rice fields are now safely accessible to women farmers in Jappineh, Sikunda, Soma and Toniataba communities and as a result over1,500 women have now embarked on rice production to feed their families.
