Beekeeping Project 2010: • An 18 member beekeeping group benefited from a 5 day refresher training on apiary management, baiting, honey harvesting and marketing. The training was facilitated by the staff of the National Beekeepers Association. • The practical sessions that members participated in were; the cleaning of apiaries, hive construction, transplanting of flowering plants, honey harvesting, packaging, labeling and marketing. • During the period, RDA completed three harvests from 21 hives with a total yield of 260 liters valued at 13,000 dalasis. Fishing Project 2010: • The communities of Karantaba, Tankularr and Jouli benefited from a fishing loan from the Social Development Fund to boost their fishing activities. The loan was used to purchase canoes, fishing nets, lifejackets, ropes and outboard engines. • Two women from each of the villages received starter capital to engage themselves in fish processing activities to improve their income. • Two men from each of the villages benefited from a loan which enabled them to buy and distribute fish to communities not within reach of the fishing areas. The Micro-finance Project: • RDA secured a microfinance loan from the Social Development Fund to enable 17 rural women to engage in various petty trading activities. • The petty trading included basic commodities like rice, sugar, vegetable oil and other small food condiments. This project was intended to control the increasing prices of basic commodities in the villages of kulikunda, KantongKunda, Taborangkoto and misera. |
The Rural Development Association is a membership organisation that aims to work with and support rural farmers in the Kiang West District to eradicate poverty and ensure an enhanced and sustainable quality of life. To develop RDA into a viable, committed community based organisation which plays an active role in literacy, skills development and income generating activities to boost employment opportunities and reduce poverty through agricultural expansion and education. The Rural Development Association (RDA) was established in 1996 and currently has a membership of 6586 people; 65% of which are women. We are located in the village of Karantaba in the Kiang West District of the Lower River Region. RDA was formed by 7 village kafos in the Kiang West as a response to the lack of donor funding and government intervention in the area. We work solely in the Kiang West Area in agriculture and food security, skills training and youth work. We are organised by: • Conducting monthly field visits to different kafoos and using a Monitoring and Evaluation questionnaire as a tool to monitor the projects • Compiling quarterly narrative and financial reports • Providing an annual report • Having an 11 member board that is elected at our Annual General Meeting to serve for a two year term We engage with government by signing an MOU with the departments linked to our areas of work including the Agricultural, Forestry and Community Development Department as well as inviting government officials to our trainings. OUR DONORS are the Church Wall Service Fund, Community Drive Development Project, National AIDS Secretariat and the Social Development Fund. |
