Objective:
To promote sustainable livelihoods among Gambian communities in order to reduce poverty and contribute to overall national development. This lot will support activities that enhance the day to day quality of life and standard of living of poor communities in The Gambia.

"Creating access to rice fields for food security enhancement" FFHC's worked to help the people of Jarra West in achieving food self-sufficiency and improved standards of living through the creation of safe and reliable access to rice fields and a baby friendly environment to enhance effective participation of women in rice cultivation. They targeted 1500 women in four communities by constructing 13 access bridges, 2500 metres of causeway and three babysitting houses, as well as providing training for 60 women.. The result was improved access to rice fields for women farmers to engage them in effective crop production. |
"Community reforestation and environmental management project" MMAP, in collaboration with AVISU, aimed to sensitise and train 4,500 community members in woodlot and orchard establishment and maintenance. The aim was to establish 40,000 timber species seedlings, to be transplanted into eight village-owned woodlots, with an additional 7,000 fruit tree seedlings to be transplanted to seven village-owned orchards. It was hoped that this would serve to improve village access to resources and provide communities with a sustainable source of income. |
"Promotion of sustainable millet and findi production" NATC's overall objective was to promote millet and findi production as a means of improving food security at the household level, increase the productivity of women farmers and increase resilience to climate change. In partnership with AVISU, 1,000 farmers were targeted in NBR and CRR, eighty percent of which were women. Main activities included training on crop production, value chain development and the use of millet residue cooking stoves; establishment of 100 community learning farms; distribution of 5,000kg improved millet and findi cultivars. |
"Rehabilitation and maintenance of local infrastructure in refugee hosting communities" SJFF targeted refugee-hosting communities in the West Coast Region, focusing on the rehabilitation and maintenance of local infrastructure. This included improving access to safe drinking water and sanitary facilities and reducing health hazards in twenty refugee-hosting communities. SJFF also aimed to strengthen the capacities of local communities in the management and control of local infrastructure in refugee-hosting areas, with a view to reducing the burden on refugee hosts and improving general standards of living. Specific activities involved the rehabilitation of Mark II water pumps, the construction of ventilated improved pit latrines, the provision of tool kits for village-level pump technicians, and training on pump maintenance and water and sanitation management. |
