Women Advancement and Child Care (WACC)
Women Advancement and Child Care (WACC) is a membership and grassroots community based organisation founded in 1998 that promotes child and women empowerment. We aim to make quality education accessible and affordable to children and women for them to have sustainable livelihoods. |
To reduce poverty, illiteracy and unemployment for sustainable livelihoods and the attainment of a high standard of living, through capacity building, agricultural activities, women’s rights & empowerment advocacy and commercial activities. |
WACC operates in three regions of the country; the West Coast Region, Lower River Region and Central River Region. Our membership base consists of 79 affiliated registered women groups across these regions. Most of our activities are based in the West Coast Region such as the Functional Literacy Project, Early Childhood Project and Advocacy and General Agriculture Programme. Our work is in line with the Millennium Development Goal 2 Education for All and The Gambia’s Vision 2020.
Our areas of intervention are:
• Educating women and children
• Poverty reduction
• Ensuring sustainable livelihoods
• Women empowerment and gender issues
• Advocacy
• Agriculture/ vegetable gardening
• Mobilisation and lobbying
• Community Development Programmes
• HIV/AIDs, malaria, TB and other related diseases
• We operate three pre-schools (nurseries) and are affiliated to seven others; annually we transit many children to formal schools
• We operate 10 Adult Literacy Centre’s in West Coast Region communities under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education
• We have been able to organise and register 79 women groups in The Gambia
• WACC has conducted more than one hundred sensitization programmes since 2004 on issues ranging from HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, children & women’s rights, environmental management, women’s active participation in politics and Governance
We are organised by having a 7 member board which is elected every 3 years by General Assembly and serves for a 3 year term. Our donors are the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), National Aids Secretariat (NAS) The Gambia, Voluntary Services Oversees (VSO), Africa Women Development Fund (AWDF), European Development Fund and Action Aid. |
