National Bee-Keepers Association of The Gambia (NBAG)
The National Beekeepers Association of the Gambia (NBAG) is an organisation that seeks to economically empower and improve the livelihoods of rural people through the promotion of modern beekeeping and quality bee products. |
NBAG was established in 2002 as a membership based organisation. We currently have a membership base of 31 organisations, 8 associations, 22 groups and 380 individuals. The association was formed as a means to encourage beekeepers to work together and to expose more people to beekeeping as a viable livelihood. |
NBAG’s focus is on sustainable livelihoods and income generation for our membership base and the farmers we support. We work nationwide in The Gambia as well as in the Casamance, Guinea Bissau and Senegal. Our organisation provides training to villages on modern beekeeping techniques and business management to encourage enterprise among farmers. NBAG provides farmers with the opportunity to sell their honey at our Nyambai Forest offices to ensure that they receive a fair price for their products. We Are Organised: by having a 9 member board of directors who are elected at our Annual General Meeting to serve for a 2 year term. Our team produces monthly narrative and financial reports. We Engage With Government: by having the Department of Forestry as our partner and including them in our quarterly board meetings. |
The NBAG has been involved in several projects to promote beekeeping; these are some of our most successful. The FAMILIES Project which started in 2006 and ran for four years, was funded by the European Union and managed in partnership with Concern Universal. The aim of the project was to work in partnership with St Joseph’s Family Farm to improve access to market information in the Western Division. The following are some of the activities that took place: • Refurbishment of the Nyambai processing centre and the construction of two processing centres in the West Coast Region • The formation of market kafos • Providing training to farmers on market analysis • Constructing beekeeping, marketing and processing centres • Conducting radio sensitisations on technical information • HIV/AIDS and gender mainstreaming Enhancing Social Stability and Unity: This project was funded by US Aid to build two processing centres in Bulock and Bremen. The farmers were trained in beekeeping and were involved in the organisational marketing Kafos. |
